Braces
Today, Annabel got her
braces. She wanted me to go with her, but when I heard
that it would probably take about two hours, I agreed
with her to go back to my office.
Playing Go
This evening, Annabel and
I went to the university to play Go.
When we arrived it was clear that we were going to have
some music this evening again. The music proved to be
quite nice, mostly covers from popular songs. Because
there was nobody there yet, Annabel invited me for a
game. We played on a 19x19 board where she got a five
stone advance. And I won the game by ease. Meanwhile
many others had arrived, and because they where all
playing we played again on a 13x13 board with her getting
three stones ahead. This time it was me who was defeated,
mainly because I played too fast. I went to get something
to drink for use, and while I did this, I noticed that
Araldo, who had been watching a game between Ton and Rudi,
asked Annabel. They played three games. The first on a
19x19 board with her getting a nine stone advance. She
lost that one. The next was on a 13x13 board with a
five stone advance. She almost won that game, but lost with
10 points. And the last game she won with four stones.
Because Ton and Rudi had finished, I could play against
Ton. We decided on a five stone advance for me. The game
progressed well for me, and Rudi, who watched us, made
some happy comments about some good moves I made. But
Ton managed to put one of my groups under pressure and
after I made some wrong moves, I resigned. Rudi gave
some analyzes of the game and gave some advice about
some small mistakes I made.
Neutrinos
The images shown here is from
the first presentation of the MiniBooNE experiment, which
deals with the question whether there are four or three flavours
of neutrinos. Their answer is that it is most likely that there
are only three. This is explained in greater details in
a scientific paper. Other scientist also have come
to the same conclusion from a different field, read for example:
Is cosmology compatible with sterile neutrinos?.
Summer has started
Today, temperatures went up to 27.5 degrees Celsius
in the center of the country, which is a record. It
never has been so warm so early in the year. Tomorrow
temperatures might even get higher and also Monday
is going to be warm, but probably a little cooler.
This afternoon, Li-Xia and
I went to the city center on our own, because
both Annabel and
Andy were staying elsewhere.
We had dinner at Camel. We also looked around some
shops. Around seven we were home again.
Hottest day in April ever
Today it was the hottest day in April on record,
with temperatures rising to 28.9 degrees Celsius
in the center of the country. Makes you wonder
how hot it will get this coming summer.
Playing Go
This evening, Annabel and
I went to the university to play Go.
We were later than usual and some of the others were
already there. Taco and Marcel were about to start a
game, but I suggested that I would play against Taco,
and that Marcel would play against Annabel. That was
okay. I started with eight stones ahead against Taco.
Annabel got nine stones ahead with Marcel and more than
hundred points Komi. She won that game, and also the
next one. I lost against Taco with 33 against 54 points.
Actually, not too bad, if you realize the difference in
strength. Afterwards we did some analysis. In the mean
time, Annabel had started a third game, playing against
Ton. She lost it, but Ton felt that she was becoming
better. It was around eleven that we left for home.
Thinking without words
In the news release
Monkeys' Ability To Reflect On Their Thoughts May Have Implications For
Infants, Autistic Children it says:
Terrace argues that, "the pattern of the monkeys' bets provided clear
evidence of their ability to engage in meta-cognition, an ability that
is all the more remarkable because monkeys lack language."
I always find it surprising that some people think that language
is essential for thinking. Maybe it is because these
people are verbal thinkers themselves and not very
familiar with non-verbal/spacial thinking.
KGS
This evening, Annabel played her first
online Go games on the KGS Go Server
against Liselot, a girl that we also know from earlier tournaments
in Apeldoorn and Zandvoort.
Where is the rain?
Yesterday, it was announced that we broke another weather related record: The longest periode without substantial
rain. It has been 33 days that we did not have any
substantial rain in the Netherlands. But it the whole
of Western Europe that is suffering from this problem.
Also in the coming week, the changes for rain are low.
This evening, Annabel and I went
to the university to play Go. When we
arrived I noticed a bad with a board and concluded that it
belonged to Juri. Shortly after Juri returned and we decided
to play with me getting eight stones ahead. When Ton arrived,
he started to play against Annabel, where she got nine stones
ahead. But things were not going well for him, and he had to
resign. In his opinion Annabel really has become stronger.
Juri was also having trouble and after having counted the points,
he concluded that he must be about forthy stones. We decided
to play another game, where I was given five stones ahead.
About half-way the mid-game, I made some mistakes giving Juri
the opportunity for an invasion. From that point on it went
downhill, and I resigned after some time.
It was only then, that I realized that the others were playing
outside on the sidewalk. I went to watch the game between Marcel
and Vincent. It was quite an exciting game, and at the end there
were four people watching, including Annabel, who was sitting on
my lap.
