February 26-28, 2007: First trip to Maastricht

February 26: Day one

We traveled from Borne, where we dropped Annabel, to Maastricht, which was 271.5 Km with a fuel usage of 17.5 Km/l. Around 10:45 we noticed that someone had called us on my mobile phone. We got off the highway and phoned back. Luckily it was only someone from the care home where Andy was staying for the holiday to ask some questions with respect to his feeding schedule. We follow the route description that I made in the past week.

Photo [60]

12:19 We arrive in Maastricht. At the fist traffic lights we turned right into "Viaductweg". We turned right into "Meerssenerweg". At large crossing (with grass on the opposite side), we turned right into "Kemenadeplein". Turned second right into "Kasteel Geijserenstraat". I parked the car on the left, and we saw the houses of photo [60] on the right. 12:22 I got out of the car and took a picture while standing almost against the houses on the left side of the street.

Photo [34]

12:26 We continued, and through some streets we arrived on the "Meerssenerweg" again, where we turned left. At large crossing, we turned right into "Viaductweg". We got into the gas station, but it is a self service station. After gas station, we turned right into "Willem Alexanderweg". At the ESSO gas station we stopped, and I made use of the restrooms. 12:35 We continued. We turned left into "Balijeweg". Cross roundabout, we turned right along canal and crossed lock. We stopped just before the "Schutkolkweg". 12:38 I took two pictures (combined) near the location of photo [34].

(We visited this location again on May 1)

Photo [33]

12:41 We turned right into "Schutkolkweg". It appeared that this was not a regular road. We had to drive slowly behind a lady riding a bike. At the end of "Schutkolkweg", we turned right into "Bovenstraat". We turned right into "Koningskampstraat", and parked on the left side of the street. 12:45 We walked a little back, and took a picture at location of photo [33].

Photo [24]

12:48 We continue on this road. At the end we turned left, then right into "Ireneweg". Outside the built-up area, just before bend to right, we stopped. 12:52 We got outside and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [24].

Photo [23]

12:54 Because there was no room to turn, we drove backwards till "Bosveldweg" and turned right into it. Road continues into "Tichter Voogdenstraat". We turned fourth left into "Adam van Harenstraat" and parked the car on the left. The owner of the house on the picture was standing outside and we showed photo [23] to her. After asking permission, I took one picture at the location.

Photo [17]

13:01 We turned and continued the into "Tichter Voogdenstraat" to the left. We turned right into "Pasestraat" only to discover a sign saying that it is not allowed to follow it. Several people with dogs were walking around. I decided that it might be possible to enter the road from the other side in order to take a picture at the location of photo [16]. We turned the car and took the first road to the left. We turned right into "Wiegershof". After the farm on the left, we parked the car. 13:06 I took three pictures (combined) at the location of photo [17]. One picture I had to take twice because the book, which Li-Xia kept up, appeared in the left bottom corner of the picture.

Photo [18]

We continued till the end of the road and parked the car there. 13:11 I took one picture at the location of photo [18].

Photo [16]

13:13 We turned and drove back to main road, just left of the farm. There we noticed that the other side of the road leading to the location of of photo [16]. We turned left and the next right. We turned right into "Pasestraat" and parked our car. 13:18 We walked to the location and I took two pictures (combined). I also took some video.

Photo [12]

13:28 We turned back and turned left again and followed the road past the two roads on the right. Just before two trees on the left, we parked the car on the right. 13:32 At the location of photo [12], I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [8]

13:34 We continued the road, and shortly after the dyke we parked the car on the rightside of the road. 13:36 I took two picture (combined) at the location of photo [8].

Photo [3]

13:38 We continued the road which led into the village "Itteren". The road became rather small. It bend to the right and changed name into "Ruijterstraat". Just after the built-up area, we turned left into "Kerkveldweg". It quickly changed into a two track mud road. We went over the dyke, after which the road became even worse, and because I was afraid of getting stuck, we decided to drive backwards. Just where the track started, I turned the car. 13:44 Li-Xia stayed in the car, while I followed the track and walked through a field to the location of photo [3]. I took two pictures (combined) at this location and walked back to the car. My shoes were full with mud on all sides and also my sleves had become dirty. I cleaned my shoes with a stick.

Photo [6]

14:04 We drove back to "Ruijterstraat" and immediately turned left into "Meebruggenweg". We drove through some large pools and parked the car on the dyke. 14:08 We continued a little further and then took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [6].

Photo [13]

14:14 We turned the car on the dyke and followed the road crossing "Ruijterstraat". On the dyke (on the other side of the village, which is completely surrounded by a dyke) we turned left and just when we went down, I recognized this as the location of photo [13]. We drove backwards a little and turned the car. 14:19 We took two pictures (combined) at this location.

Photo [10]

14:22 We went back to "Ruijterstraat" and turned right into it. We continued this road straight into "Op de Warreij". 14:26 We parked our car and walked on the "Bunder Voetpad" under an umbrella, because it started to rain. There I took a picture at the possible location for photo [10].

Photo [9]

14:37 We turned the car and drove back to where "Op de Bos" starts on the left. 14:40 Still in the car, we noticed that the considered location for photo [9] was wrong. The correct location was on the same crossing. The road in the picture was "Op de Bos". I took one picture. (At home, I discovered that I was mistaken, and that I had identified it correctly.)

Photo [14]

14:43 We turned left into "Op de Bos". Close to the canal the road bends to the left and then makes a U-turn to the right. I noticed a small road in the U-turn going into the direction of "Haertelstein". At the top we park right. 14:46 We crossed the bridge over the canal, and took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [14].

Photo [4]

14:51 We crossed the bridge and turn left into "Meerssenhoven". We passed by Meerssenhoven and parked our car on the right. It started to rain quite strong. We saw a girl getting of her bike and looking at her flat tire. She immediately got her mobile phone and continued walking. We decided to wait in the car for some time. A little to the left the sky was getting light again. 15:05 We decided to continue and first visit the locations near "Haertelstein". At the end, we turned left into "Meerssenhovenweg". In "Bunde", we turned left into "Meerstraat". This makes a slow bend to the right. In sharp bend to right, we continued left into "Meerstraat". We crossed the bridge. At the bottom, we turned left into "Voulwames" and immediately turned left into "Haertelsteinweg". We turned right into the small road "Stegelveldweg". There where it turns to the right we turned the car and continue driving backwards to the location of photo [4]. 15:18 Li-Xia opened the window on her side of the car and we found the exact location and I took two pictures (combined) through the open window.

Photo [7]

We drive back to "Haertelsteinweg" and turn right and took the road leading to "Haertelstein" and we stop at the end of the straight part leading to it. 15:28 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [7].

Photo [15]

15:29 We went back to "Haertelsteinweg" and decided to continue on this road to the right. The road leads to the bridge and we crossed it and turned left into "Meerssenhoven". And we stop at the place where we stopped before. 15:33 It started to rain a little again. The location of photo [15] is in the middle of the field on the left side of the tree, which has water everywhere. After some deliberations, I decide to give it a try. Soon I feel the mud beginning to stick on all sides of my shoes. I douth again, but do continue. I took three pictures (combined). When I arrive at the road again there is almost two centimeters (one inch) of mud on around my shoes. I use some stick again and move them through the grass to clean them.

Photo [20]

15:40 We continue and turned left into "Meerssenhovenweg". At the end, we turned right into "Fregatweg". At next crossing we turned left into "Boekenderweg" and park a little further. 15:43 We walk back to the "Fregatweg" and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [20].

Photo [28]

15:47 We continue and turned right into "Weert". We park the car on the rightside. I get out of the car and study the low bushes along the left side of the road seeing if I can find the location of photo [28]. I could not find it, I took one picture of the field because it is quite clear that some part of it is in the photo.

(We visited this location again on May 1)

Photo [38]

15:53 We continue and have to stop before the railroad crossing. We pass the two railroad crossing. We cross the large road into a small road. We park the car at the left of it. 15:56 There is a gate which is wide open. When I pass it, I notice a "no trespassing" sign. Nevertheless, I decided to walk a little further and quickly took a picture at the location of photo [38], because I feel that I could always use the excuse that I did not notice the sign because it is not visible from the road.

Photo [47]

15:59 We turned the car and turned left into "Marienwaard". Just before the large crossing, we turned left into the grounds of some institution. We follow road to the left and parked our car. 16:09 We walked to the next turn in the road and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [47].

Photo [37]

16:06 We got of the grounds and drove straight into the direction of railroad. Just before the railroad crossing, we parked the car on the pavement. 16:09 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [37].

Photo [36]

16:11 We continued and turned right into "Fregatweg". After the second street to the right, we turned into a small road that led to a forest area. In the route description it said that photo [26] was taken somewhere in the forest area. But that appeared wrong to me. And because I thought it would be hard to find, we decided to skip it and go to the next. We turned the car and turned back into "Fregatweg". Opposite "Hoekerweg" we entered grounds of the Citroen garage. 16:19 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [36].

Photo [26]

16:22 We continue and at the end turned right into "Galjoenweg". We turned right into "Punterweg". We parked outside the gate of some factory in the bend to the left. 16:25 We walked to the reception, showed the book and asked if we could take a picture of the canal. It was okay. We walked around the building and I took a picture at the location of photo [26]. There was some construction and a ship blocking most of the view.

Photo [25]

16:30 We continued. At the end, we turned right into "Ankerkade". 16:35 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [25], while Li-Xia stayed in the car.

Photo [19]

We continued till almost the end, and parked the car on the left. We both got out of the car and looked for the location of photo [19]. We found it and I took two pictures (combined). It was already getting dark, and we decided to take one more picture.

Photo [35]

16:41 We turned back and turned third right into "Karveelweg". There we looked for the location of photo [35], about which I was not completely sure. It turned out to be correct and I took two picture (combined).

From there we drove to the Van der Valk hotel. We drove 39.9 Km with a fuel usage of 10.3 Km/l.

In the evening we visited a couple in Bunde who belong to the Dutch Kabuki Syndrome Network. We stayed with them for almost two and half hour, and they gave their EasyBall to us to borrow. We drove 16.9 Km with a fuel usage of 13.7 Km/l.

February 27: Day two

We woke-up around seven o'clock. And after we had breakfast, we left from the hotel short after eight.

Photo [45]

We drove back to "Willem Alexanderweg" and turned first right into "Balijeweg", then again right into "Emmausstraat", and immediately left into "Azamonstraat" where we parked the car on the right side of the street. 8:15 I took one picture on the grass field on the other side of the road at the location of photo [45].

Photo [46]

8:18 We continued on the street which made a bend to the right. We continued in the same direction following "Carmelstraat" and "Judeaweg". When we wanted to turn in the parking place near the school, we noticed a gate and decided continue. We turned back, and parked on the left. 8:21We walked onto the property of Hoge Hotelschool Maastricht. The reception is left in the Bethlehem Castle. We asked if we can take a picture. The lady who helps us, said that she has to phone someone and then talked in the local dialect with someone. It was okay, and we crossed the campus to the soccer field in the back. There I took two picture (combined) at the location of photo [46]. We walked back to the car.

Photo [59]

8:39 We turned left into "Bethlehemweg" (that is the second street, because it is split into two one way streets). At the end we turned left and right to continue into "Bethlehemweg". At the end we turned left into "Populierweg" and immediately right into "Sionsweg". We parked the car on the right short after the first crossing. I was not sure about the location where the picture was taken, and got the idea that it was taken around where we parked the car. 8:42 We looked around, and finally walked to the location that I had thought was most likely, and it turned out it was correct. I took one picture at the location of photo [59], and then we walked back to the car.

(We visited this location again on May 2)

Photo [71]

8:50 We continued and turned right into "Sareptastraat", left into "Dolmansstraat", left into "Willem Alexanderweg". At the large crossing, we turned right into "Noorderbrug" and crossed the "Noorderbrug" bridge. We took the next exit lane to the right. At the bottom we turned right into "Bosscherweg". Under the viaduct, we turned right into "Frontensingel" and immediately right into a small parking place. There we turned the car and went outside to take a picture. 9:00 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [71].

Photo [57]

9:03 We left the parking place and turn left. When I wanted to get in the right lane, I discovered that the road I just got into was a one-way road. We turned left into "Bosscherweg". After water on the righthand side, we turned right into "Pastoor Moormanstraat". Just after the bridge to the right we turned the car and parked it. 9:06 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [57].

Photo [43]

9:08 We drove back to "Bosscherweg" and continued to the right. We crossed two bridges and turned right into "Smeermaeserweg". We turned right into "Stuwweg" and parked the car after the bridge on the left. 9:11 We walked back on the bridge and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [43].

Photo [44]

9:14 we continued along the "Stuwweg". After the road bend to the left, it became quite worse. There where many holes filled with water and the last part was one big pool. We drove slowly through it and parked near the dam. 9:20 When we got out of the car, we heard a lot of noise coming from the water flowing down behind the dam. I immediately got the video camera and made some video from the water flowing over the dam. I noticed that the water level was lower immediately after the dam compared to about ten meters further. I remembered taking a picture at the location of photo [44] as well, but later I could not find the picture. Maybe I did not press the button long enough, or maybe I erased it without knowing this.

(We visited this location again on May 1)

Photo [58]

9:25 We got into the car and followed the track upstream along the river. We saw some birds (Great Cormorants, I would guess) sitting on the robe in front of the dam for preventing ships going down the dam, and I took a picture of them after opening the window. We continued till the end. 9:29 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [58].

Photo [32]

9:32 We drove back to the "Bosscherweg" and parked the car on a small parking place before it. 9:41 We crossed the road and walked along it, looking for the location of photo [32], but we could not find it. I did take a picture, just to have a picture. We walked back to the car. About halfway, I took a picture of the village "Borgharen". 9:55 We continued into "Bosscherweg". Just after the location where I took the picture, I thought that I saw the correct location. 9:57 We parked the car just before the next house on the right and walked back. But again we were not convinced that we found the location.

(We visited this location again on May 1)

Photo [22]

10:06 We continued with the car along "Bosscherweg" and parked just before the border. 10:08 There were some rafts on the Meuse river with solders. There was some man explaining to us that they did this because the water was high and that in the summer you could cross the river a little further on. I took two pictures at the location of photo [22]. After I took the first picture, I realized that photo [22] was taken from a rather high position. For the second picture I held the camera above my head and took a picture while aiming it in the right direction.

(We visited this location again on May 1)

Photo [11]

10:13 In Belgium we turned right into "Maasdijk", the road along the Meuse. After the last house, we turned the car and parked it in front of it. 10:16 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [11].

Photo [5]

10:18 We went back to the main road and turned right into it. We turned right into "N766" in the direction of "Rekkem". At the roundabout at end, we turned right into "N78". We turned right into the street that seemed to be "Ladderstraat", but it was not. I concluded that we should have taken the next road. For this reason, we turned left at the next crossing. At the next crossing we arrived at "Ladderstraat" and followed it to the right. (The name changes into "Geulerweg".) We parked before the platform along the Meuse river. 10:28 We watched the soldiers pass on their rafts again. Then I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [5]. When I finished the picture, I noticed that the low-battery indicator.

Photo [2]

10:38 Almost at the same place I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [2]. We discovered that we left our fresh batteries in the hotel. Li-Xia suggested that we should buy some new batteries in a shop.

Photo [1]

We followed the road and after some searching, found the location for photo [1]. 10:48 I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [21]

10:51 We drove back to "N78" and turned left. While we drove through "Meerharen" we looked for a shop and when we saw the "Diversa" do-it-yourself shop, we immediately parked after it. It was a small shop and they had some batteries. We bought four Duracell Plus AA batteries for € 4.50. We continued. On the round about we turned left into "N766". We stopped at a gas station at the right, because we wanted to make use of the restrooms, but it was closed on Tuesdays. Back in the Netherlands, we turned right into a little road. 11:09 There I took a picture at the location of photo [21]. I crossed the road to a gas station to ask if I could make use of the restroom, but they answered that they did not have a restroom for public use.

Photo [31]

11:15 We continued on the little road, which after a turn arrived on "N766" again. We continued right on "N766". After a railroad tunnel, we turned right onto property. There we asked if we could take a picture. The lady objected, but when we told that we wanted to take the picture from a near by field and that her house was not going to be on it, she said that it was okay. We searched for the location of photo [31], and found it at the place that I had in mind. I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [41]

11:28 We continued right on "N766". Almost at built-up area, we turned left into "Postwagenstraat" and parked the car at the end of the street. First we walked towards the "N766" and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [41].

Photo [42]

11:32 From there we walked behind the last building at the "Postwagenstraat" and I decended the slow a little in order to take two pictures (combined) at the location of and photo [42]

Photo [56]

11:42 We drove back to "N766" and turned left to continue our way. We turned left into "Sandersweg". After two turns (where the road goes downhill) and some forest we parked out car on the rightside of the road. 11:47 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [56].

Photo [70]

11:50 We continued the road and at the end we turned right into "Fort Willemweg" and turned immediately left into "Lage Frontweg". At the end of this road we parked our car on the left side, before some workplace. 11:54 There I took one picture at the location of photo [70].

Photo [69]

11:59 We turned right into "Cabergerweg" and then left into "Fort Willemweg". Halfway this road, we turned and went into the play-garden and midget golf place at "Fort Willem" to see if there were restrooms there, but the place looked deserted. We continued into "Fort Willemweg". At the roundabout, we turn right into the service road and parked our car after the houses that are visible in photo [69]. We crossed the street and walked a little back. There I took two pictures (combined). We checked if some cafe was open.

Photo [55]

12:13 We continued along the service road till the next large roudabout and parked our car just before it. 12:15 I took one picture at the location of photo [55].

Photo [40]

12:21 We turned left on roundabout and immediately right into "Van Akenweg". We followed this road almost till the end of the built-up area and turned left into the second for last street. I turned the car and parked it on the left side of the street. We walked back to the end of the street, and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [40]. It was not possible to take a picture at the exact location, because there was a car parked at it.

Photo [29]

12:28 We turned left and continued into "Van Akenweg". Outside the built-up area, where the road changes into a sand road, I went outside to search for the possible location of photo [30]. We continued till just before the location of photo [29]. The boarder pole was visible on the left of the road. I took two pictures (combined) at the location. Because we were in the middle of some field, out of sight of anybody, we made use of the opportunity to get ride of some excessive fluids.

Photo [30]

12:41 I drove the car in reverse, which I am getting beter and beter at, and turned at the next crossing of sand roads. Just after the crossing, I found a location, which looked a better candidate for the possible location of photo [30]. 12:48 I went outside and took one picture.

Photo [39]

Back in the build-up area, we turned right into "Pandectendonk", then right into "Ade Caerteruwe", and left into "Touwstruwe". When wanted to turn into the parking place of the soccer park on the right, we noticed a no trespassing sign, but we decided to go in anyway. There were two other cars parked on the parking place, but we could not see anybody. We quickly went outside and took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [39].

Photo [52]

15:56 We went back to the road and continued to the right. At the end of the road we followed the turn to the left, and then we turned right into "Floretruwe". Almost at the end, we parked our car. 12:59 We went outside to take a picture at the location of photo [52]. The house on the left (along the "Floretruwe") was decorated with pink, and when someone arrived, the door was opened by a nurse dressed in white. All seemed to indicate that there was just a baby-girl born in this house.

Photo [53]

13:12 We turned left into "Kurasruwe", the fourth left into "Ponjaardruwe", and the second right into "Schildruwe". There we turned right and parked our car somewhere. 13:07 We went outside and took a picture at the location of Photo [53]. The building that used to be at the otherside of "Schildruwe" was just broken down and they were busy cleaning up the area.

Photo [54]

13:11 We continued right into "Schildruwe". We turned left into "Schepelruwe", right into "Malbergsingel", left into "Carolijnruwe", and fourth (at the end) right into "Daaldersruwe". Then we turned right into what the thought was the fourth street. But that was wrong. We turned the car and parked on the rightside of the street. 13:10 We walked back to the street before and concluded that we had taken the fifth street on the right. I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [54].

Photo [68]

13:24 We turned again, and continued the road till "Malbergsingel" where we turned left. At the roundabout we went straight and then right into the parking place of the shopping center "Malpertuis" and parked our car there. 13:38 We walked to the location of photo [68] and I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [67]

We got of the parking place and turned left in the direction of the roundabout. On the roundabout we turned left into "Cantecleerstraat". We turned the second (on a large crossing) right into "Via Regia", left into "Dousberg"(?), and right into "Dousbergweg". We parked on the parking place. 13:38 We walked back to "Via Regia", and I took one picture at the location of photo [67].

Photo [66]

13:52 We drove back to "Via Regia" and follow it to the left. The next road we turned left, and parked our car on the right. 13:48 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of Photo 66].

Photo [79]

13:52 We turned back and turned right into "Via Regia". Just before the canal we wanted to turn left, when I noticed a sign stating that the road had limited access. Li-Xia immediately said that we should just continue, and that is what we did. We turned left into the third sand road and parked our car near the next crossing. According to the route description, we should have gone straight, but now there was a gate which prevented us to continue. It was obvious that a new golf course was being constructed. 14:00 We walked to a place near the location of photo [79] and I took one picture.

Photo [80]

14:10 We continued the road to the right and at the end I took some time to study the map to determine where we were. We turned left into "Goudenweg", right, right into "Keramieksingel", left into "Opalinestraat", where we parked before the first street on the left ("Decorstraat"). 14:13 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [80].

Photo [81]

14:17 We continues into "Opalinestraat" and at the end, we turned left into "Potteriestraat". On the roundabout we turned right into "Terra Cottaplein". (Name changes into "Terra Nigrastraat"). Before the next rounabout we parked right into a small street. 14:21 We walked to the roundabout and took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [81].

Photo [82]

14:28 We turned and continued into "Terra Nigrastraat" and on the roundabout we turned left into "Porseleinstraat". At the large roundabout we turned right into "Via Regia". On the next roundabout we made a full turn and drove right into the service road. We turned the car, and parked it. 14:38 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of Photo 82].

Photo [83]

14:41 We drove to the mainroad and turn right into it. We immediately turned left into "Becanusstraat" where we turned. Then we went right into "Via Regia" to continue our way. On the roundabout we turned left into "Sint Annalaan". On the next roundabout we wanted to turn straight into "Brusselsestraat", but that was not possible. So we drove into "Statensingel" and immediately right into "Zakstraat". There we discovered that there were only parking places for permit holders. We felt we had no choice and we parked our car on the left just after the "Herbenusstraat". We walked back to the crossing and took six pictures at the location of photo [83] because there was some garbage container at the exact location and because it was taken right immediately behind a tree (combined picture).

(We visited this location again on May 2)

Photo [97]

14:50 We continued on the "Zakstraat" and turned right into "Brusselsestraat". On roundabout we turned left into "Hertogsingel". Just before the next roundabout we turned into a small service road and parker our car behind a sports car. 14:55 We walked a little further, and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [97].

Photo [96]

15:00 We got on the main road and turned the third right into "Ruttensingel" (and not the fifth right into "Gentiaanstraat", as the route description said), because I had lost count a little, and was afraid that I would have turned too late. We turned the second into "Madoerastraat", and parked our car just after "Fatimaplein". 15:04 We crossed the grass to the location of photo [96]. There I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [95]

15:09 We continued on the "Madoerastraat", only to discover that it changed into a one way street in the opposite direction. But after some deturns we did turn right into "Javastraat". We turned right (at crossing) into "Ebenistendreef", and immediately right into "Zeepziedersdreef". At the end we parked our car on the parking place. I took one picture at the location of photo [95].

Photo [94]

15:17 We drove back and turned left into "Ebenistendreef", right into "Gewantmakersdreef", and, on the roudabout, left into "Keurmeesterdreef". On the next roundabout we turned left. A little further we turned the car and parked it on the right side. 15:28 We walked back to the roundabout and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [94].

Photo [93]

15:38 We went straight on the roundabout into "Hazendanweg". According to the route description we should have turned left into "Koninksemstraat", but that was not possible because it was a one-way street. Instead we continued to "Hazendamplein" and turned left into "Overrepenstraat" and right into "'s-Herenelderenlaan". It was also not possible to go into "Neremstraat", so we turned second left into "Lauwstraat", left into "Koninksemstraat", and right into "Ketsingenstraat" where we parked. We walked to the bicycle path and took a picture at the possible location of photo [93]. On the corner some children were talking with each other and seemed to complete ignore the rain.

Photo [107]

15:38 We drove back to roundabout and turned right into "Aureliushof". At the end we turned right into "Penatenhof" and then immediately left into "Dianahof". At the end we parked our car on the right side of the road. 15:43 I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [107].

Photo [108]

15:46 We followed the bend to left into "Cupidohof". At the end, we turned left into "Numitorhof", right into "Lammergierstraat", and left into "Hermesweg". There we parked our car on the left. 15:50 There was quite a lot of traffic and we had to wait a bit before I could take two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [108].

Photo [109]

15:33 We continued and turned right into "Tongersweg" N278, left into "Pletzersstraat", and the second right into "Medoclaan". After a gentle bend to the right we turned right into "Chambertinlaan" and parked the car just around the corner on the rightside of the street. Again I felt some urge to go to the restrooms and we talked a little about this. 16:00 We walked back to "Medoclaan" and I took a picture at the location of photo [109].

Photo [110]

16:05 We continued and at the end we turned right into "Aramislaan". After bend to right, we turned right right into "Cannerweg" on crossing, then right into "Musketiersplein", and immediately left and left again into "Susserweg". This road is rather small and we parked our car on the right. I took three pictures (combined) at the location of photo [110].

Photo [120]

We continue into "Susserweg", which soon became very small. I prayed that we would not meet any car driving in the opposite direction, because it would surely mean that we one of use would have to reverse. We park at crossing with "Dalingweg" between vinyards. We ignored the sign saying that the parking place was only for vistors of "apostelhoeve" as it was completely empty. We walked a little back to the location of photo [120]. I took one picture there. We went back to the car to get the video camera and took some video as well. Then back at the car I could not resist the call of nature. Except for some woman a little dog, there was nobody to be seen.

Photo [130]

We continue further into "Susserweg" and at the next crossing, we turned left. Just a little further, we parked the car right into some cart tracks. We got out of the car and followed the tracks to the location of photo [130]. There I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [121]

We backed-up, and continued the small and tight road, which made a steep descent. I turned left on the split (which was not included in the description), and almost at the bottom there was a small road (leading to "Apostelhoeve"). We parked on the right, just before the crossing with "Cannerweg". We crossed the road and walked to the location of photo [121]. There were some black crows sitting on the fence, which flew away when we approached them. I took one picture. I walked back to the car to get the video camera to take some more video.

Photo [131]

We turned right into "Cannerweg" and parked just before the first house on the right. We looked in the forest on the left for the location of photo [131], and were able to find a spot that seemed to match the photo quite well. (Of course, one can never be sure.) I took one picture.

Photo [140]

We continue road our road, but we parked shortly after Chat@acirc;u Neercanne, and looked around a little in the garden in from of this castle. I also took some video. Then we followed "Cannerweg" to the right and into Belgium. We turned right into "Muizenberg". There we drove into a small road along the rightside of the road. We parked our car near an entrance to a field. We went into the field and walked to the location of photo [140]. After some searching, I took one picture. We walked back to the car.

Back to hotel

17:20 We went back to the hotel. When we arrived there we had driven 70.7 Km with a fuel usage of 10.4 Km/l. We had dinner in the hotel and afterwards went to the fitness room and did some fitness. We closed the evening with taking a warm bath in our room.

February 28: Day three

Again we woke up around seven o'clock and went down for breakfast.

Photo [142]

8:12 We left from the hotel and went drove over "Cannerweg" to Belgium, but followed the road to the left just before entering Belgium. We turned left again into "Op 't Broek" and then right into "Mergelweg", where we got behind a garbage truck. Instead of turning left, we continued only to discover that we went wrong. When we drove back we encountered the garbage truck again before we turned right into "Pruisstraat". At the end of this street, we turned the car and parked it near a small graveyard. 8:38 We followed the path at the end of "Pruisstraat" up the hill. At some crossing we turned left and soon arrived at the location of photo [142]. I took two pictures (combined) there.

Photo [143]

We walked back to the crossing and continued in the right direction. We went up some small path into the forest on the right, with the idea that it might be a short cut, but it was not really one. We crossed some field and walked higher up the hill, which is called "Sint Pietersberg" looking for the location of photo [143]. We could not really find it, and I decided to just take a picture somewhere point in the direction of the marl quarry, which was barely visible because of the thick trees. Maybe should have walked higher up the hill, but both of us were not in the mood, also because it had started to rain quite strong and the grass was rather wet.

(We searched for this location again on May 2)

Photo [141]

We walked down the hill back to the car. 9:24 We drove back the street and turned right into "Mergelstraat". Outside built-up area, we parked right before a house on the right where there was a vegetable garden on the left. 9:29 We walked through this vegetable garden to the location of photo [141]. I took two pictures (combined) there.

(We visited this location again on May 2)

Photo [111]

9:35 After we cleaned our shoes we continued into "Mergelstraat". In built-up area, we turned into the road going to the left, called "Laan van Brunswijk". We determind the exact location of photo [111], and took two pictures (combined) from it.

Photo [112]

9:45 We turned back and continued left into "Mergelstraat". We turned right into "Luikerweg" and left into "Mosasaurusweg". After second road to the right, we parked our car on the right. I took one picture at the location of photo [112].

Photo [133]

9:51 We continued and at the end we turned left into "Plateauweg", and right into "Recollectenweg", which continues into "Ursulineweg" (which comes from the left). We turned right into "Zonnebergweg", which was a rather tight road going up-hill. Again I was hoping that we would not meet any car going in the opposite direction. We could not turn left into "Lichtenbergweg" as it said in the route description, so we parked our car at the crossing. 9:56 We walked all the way to the location of photo [133]. Because this is close the edge of the marl quarry the wind was blowing very strong over the top. We both had to cling to our umbrella (because it was raining) while we searched for the exact location and while I took two pictures (combined). We walked back to the car.

Photo [124]

10:18 We turned back into "Zonnebergweg". At the bottom it was not possible to turn right into "Slavante" as it said in the route description, so we turned right into "Ursulineweg", which we followed till "Lage Kanaaldijk". We turned right into "Lage Kanaaldijk" and parked our car on the right. We crossed the road and walked to the location of photo [124], where I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [99]

10:28 Back at the car, we made a full turn, and turned into "Maasboulevard". Under the bridge we went into the parking place. I put € 4.00 in the meter to get a ticket for behind the windscreen. Then we walked to the location of photo [99]. Here I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [98]

We walked back a little, crossed "Maasboulevard" and crossed the "Stadspark" into "Sint Pieterskade". I took some video of the little ducks that were swimming behind their mother and some other birds. We went throught the city gate and walked into "Begijnenstraat" At the end we turned left into "Sint Pieterstraat". At the end, where the street to the right is called "Zwingelput", I took a picuture at the location of photo [98]. Again, finding the exact location was hindered by a car being parked in the street.

Photo [84]

We turned right into "Zwingelput", then right into "Grote Looiersstraat", left into "Achter de Molens", right into "Witmakersstraat", straight into "Cortenstraat", left into "Onze Lieve Vrouweplein". There I looked for a place where we could eat something for lunch (soup) and make use of the restrooms. But we continued and walked straight into "Wolfstraat". We went into the "Bart Smits" toys shop where Li-Xia wanted to look if she could find some Pokémon toys for Andy. On the opposite of the street we shortly looked into a small "light and electricity" shop. We continued and turned left into "Achter het Vleeshuis". I remarked to Li-Xia how all street names refer to professions of people in the past and that this is probably how these streets got their names. We walked straight into "Sint Amorsplein" and finally arrived at the famous "Vrijthof" square. There we noticed a McDonalds on the right. We decided to buy a happy meal and use the restrooms. After having finished it, we continued into "Helmstraat", but when I saw a truck parked right in front of location photo [84] and my attention was drawn by an interesting looking water evaporation device, we went into the shop to have a closer look. When we came outside the truck was gone and after having walked to the location, I took one picture.

We walked right into "Grote Gracht" and looked around on the open air market that was held on the "Markt" square. Through the "Hoenderstraat" we walked to the "Maaspromenade" that we followed to the right. Near the "Sint Servaasbrug" we walked a little into the city again, where we went into a shop along "Het Bat", if I am not mistaken. This shop had a glass stair going from the second to the third floor. It was quite an interesing experience to use it. We followed our way along the "Maasboulevard" and when we came to "De Hoge Brug" ("The High Bridge") we decided to use the elevator to go onto the bridge. There I took two picture of Li-Xia, one with the "Servaas" bridge on the background, and one along the bridge. We went down and continued along "Maasboulevard" where we were forced to walk along the location of photo [99].

Photo [114]

We got into our car and turned left into "Maasboulevard", and again left into the entry to the "N278" in the direction East. Over the bridge we took the first exit, and the bottom we turned left into "Limburgerlaan". We tried to get into the parking place of the province hall, but there was a gate. (We wanted to walk from there to the location of photo [113]). We continued left into "Randwycksingel", and right into "Leuvenlaan", where we turned and parked on the rightside of the street. 12:52 We walked to the location of photo [114] and I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [115]

12:57 Back in the car, we turned right into "Randwycksingel", and right into "Johan Willem Beyenlaan", which bends to the left. There we discovered that we could not continue, because the road was closed for normal traffic. We turned right into "Jac Thijssedomein" and turned back at the end. We turned left into "Johan Willem Bayenlaan" and after the bend (to the right) we followed the road into "Duboisdomein" which bends to the right into "Paul Henri Spaaklaan". We turned right into "Gaetano Martinolaan" and the second left into "Universiteitssingel", where we parked on the right in some parking place. From there we walked to the location of photo [115], where I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [125]

13:12 We continued on the "Universiteitssingel" and followed it along the railway. We turned (the second) right into "Oxfordlaan", and, at the end, left into "P. Debylaan". Then at large crossing, we turned right into "Oeslingerbaan", and at roundabout left into "Kapittellaan". Just before the bend to the left we parked on right. We walked a little further to the location of photo [125], where I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [113]

13:24 We continued on "Kapittellaan", and, at the end, we turned right into "Oude Maasstraat", we crossed "Hoge Weerd", and continued into "Lage Weerd", which turns to the right. From the map, I had got the impression that this road led till the location of photo [113], but this was not true. The road was blocked about half way, and we had to walk the remaining distance, which is about one and half kilometer. The sun started to shine and it was a nice walk, except for some muddy part. I took two pictures (combined) as the location of photo [113]. When we walked back, had I to give heed to a certain urge.

Photo [134]

13:56 We turned back and drove to "Hoge Weerd" where we turned left, and then right into the private road to leading to the harbour. We parked our car on the parking place near the Meuse and walked to the location of photo [134]. There I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [135]

14:09 We turn back to the main road and continued right into "Hoge Weerd", and left into "Balsemienbeemd". There I forgot to turn immediately left into "Oosterweg". I parked somewhere, and checked the map. We turned back, and turned right into "Oosterweg" and right into "Oosterweertlaan". We parked somewhere on the rightside, and spend some time looking for the right location, also because the houses were numbered in a strange way. I took four pictures (combined) at the location of photo [135].

Photo [144]

14:22 We turn and drove back to "Hoge Weerd" where we continued to the right. At the water, we entered the small path on the right. There I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [144].

Photo [145]

14:29 We backed-out and continue right into "Hoge Weerd". At next crossing, We parked on the right opposite "Molensingel". 14:30 We got out of the car and crossed the road to the location of photo [145], where I took one picture.

Photo [147]

14:34 We continued right into "Hoge Weerd", left into "Kobbesweg", right into "Schaapbroekweg", and right into "Rekoutweg". At the end, we park near the entrance of the wastewater processing plant. 14:40 We walked along the threes in the grass. There was no path as I had expected. We were also not able to locate the place where photo [146] is taken. When we walk back to the car, I take a picture of the construction where the power conducting lines of the railway switch from the Dutch system to the Belgium system. 14:48 We turned the car and drove back. We turned left into "Schaapbroekweg/Stationsstraat", left into "Oosterbroekweg", right into "Viaductweg", and, at roundabout, left into "Slakweg". The parking place with the soccer fields was closed. We parked the car near the children's farm called "de Wieringenberg" after we had turned the car. We went into the children's farm to see if we could find the location of photo [147]. At one point we realized that the trees that are in the children's farm, might be the one photo. We went inside the building to ask the people how long the farm has been there. One of the woman recognized the photo when we showed it to her, and she affirmed that it is how the place looked before they started the farm. After we searched a little, we discovered the exact location. I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [138]

15:10 On the roundabout, we continued left into "Rijksweg" and after windmill we turned the first road right. We park at the windmill. 15:12 We searched some time for the exact location of photo [138] and I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [139]

15:20 We continued along the "Bronckweg" and parked our car right on a small road where the first vinyard begins. 15:23 We looked around a little, and I took one picture at the possible location of photo [139].

Photo [137]

15:28 We turned back into the direction of the wind mill. At the end we turned left into "Rijksweg", and right into "Langendaal" This street bends to the right in a long curve. After third street left, we parked left in a parking place (I was right with respect to the observation that it was possible to enter this parking place from this street). We went outside and I took one picture at the location of photo [137].

Photo [136]

15:35 From the parking place we continued left into "Langendaal". We turned left into "Steynboeckel", crossed the viaduct, turned left Left into small road. Before the railroad, we folloed the road to the right. We parked there, and walked to the location of photo [136], which is on a bicycle path. There I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [73]

15:44 The next photo on the route description was photo [126], but when I read that it involved some walking again, I decided that we would stop from here, also because it was almost four o'clock. I do know anymore which route we took, but went onto the highway A2 and drove through the city center. Immediately after the center, we turned left into "Viaductweg" because we wanted to get some gas at the gas station before we would go home. But suddenly the sun started to shine again, and we got some desire to visit a few more locations. We turned left into "Meerssenerweg" and parked somewhere on the right. There I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [73].

Photo [86]

We continue on this road, and parked the car at railway station. Li-Xia stayed in the car, and I walked a little further to the location of photo [86]. There I took two pictures (combined).

Going home

16:17 Finally, we decided to go home. At the gas station, I concluded that we had driven 44.5 Km with a fuel usage of 11.0 Km/l. We arrived at home around a kwarter past eight. We did encounter some traffic jams, not very serious, and we also used about 20 minutes to drive through the drive-through the McDonalds restaurant Amersfoort Noord.
