April 30 - May 2, 2007: Second trip to Maastricht

After our very succesfull first trip to Maastricht we decided to for a second time. In the week before this trip, I prepared this route description.

Monday April 30: Day one

We first dropped off Andy at the place where he would stay for the rest of the week. Yesterday, Annabel already had gone to a friend to stay there till Wednesday. Today, is Queens day, which is a national holiday. At 9:31 we got on highway A35 on our way to Maastricht.

Photo [126]

12:34 Inside Maastricht, we continued following highway (E25). After cloverleaf we took the first exit, turned right at the top right into "Oeslingerbaan". We turned first left into "Molensingel" and immediately left into "Graanmolen". We parked our car on the parking place of EZN Electromotorenfabriek Zuid-Nederland BV. 12:40 We walked back to "Oeslingerbaan" and took two picture (combined) at the location of photo [126].

Photo [146]

We walked back to the car. 12:47 We continued left into "Molensingel" and missed the fourth left into "Watermolen". A little further we made a U-turn and took the first left into "Watermolen", next right into "Windmolen", and followed this road to the the left "Windmolen". We parked on a parking place on the left of the road. 12:52 It was immediately clear that we were at the location of photo [146]. I took two pictures (combined) at the location.

Photo [127]

12:56 We turned back, right into "Windmolen", left into "Watermolen", right into "Molensingel". I missed the second right into "Steynboeckel" and made a U-turn at the next crossing. We crossed the viaduct. We turned the fourth left (at large crossing) into "Langendaal". It appeared that just before where we had to turn left into "Borghaag" there was a bus lock, a construction in the road which does not permit normal car to pass. We made a U-turn and turned right into "Steynboeckel" and right into "Borghaag". We followed this road to almost the end and turned left into "Camphaag". We parked somewhere at the end. 13:05 We walked back to the location of photo [127] and took two pictures (combined).

Photo [128]

We walked back to the car. 13:09 We returned to "Borghaag" and turned left. We went straigh ahead at the crossing with "Langendaal". We followed the road to the right and took the second left into "Eykelborg", next Left into "Rijksweg", right into "Savelsbosch", and right into "Onderstebosch". We parked at the turn in the road. 13:14 At first I was a little confused in which direction the picture was taken, and then concluded that it was taken in the direction of "Oude Molenweg". A little later, I remembered that although I first had thought that it was taken in the direction of "Vroendaelweg", I had corrected this later into the direction of "Oude Molenweg". Then we spend some time to figure out where the picture was taken along the "Oude Molenweg". But finally, I concluded that it was on the crossing of "Oude Molenweg" and "Vroendaelweg" because of the alignment of a hut and some trees on the right side of the picture. I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [128].

Photo [116]

13:21 We turned and went back to "Rijksweg", where we continued to the right. At second roundabout I wanted to turn left into "Kruisstraat", but this was not possible because it was a one-way road. After having consulted the map, we continued straight (from "Rijksweg") into "Dorpstraat". The first road to the left, "Hovenstraat", was also a one-way street. We took the second road, "Oude Kerkstraat", to the left. We followed this till the end, and turned right into "Hovenstraat" (luckily no longer a one-way road). We turned right into "Bromweg" and parked on the right. 13:28 We walked to the location of photo [116] and I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [129]

13:32 Back in the car, we continued, turned left twice, and through "Op de Was" went to "Kruisstraat", where we turned left. After the roundabout the name changes into "Veldstraat", and a little further into "Heerder Holstraat" outside built-up area. We parked the car at some pumping station. 13:37 We walked to the location of photo [129] and I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [118]

13:45 We turned back and turned right into "Oude Molenweg". It was not possible to turn right into the small road, as it says in the route description I had made, instead I parked on the left, just after the street "Gretrystraat" on the left. 13:48 We crossed the grass field and walked to the location of photo [118], which appeared to be a little further along the road then I had thought. I took two pictures (combined) at the location.

Photo [117]

13:57 We continued and at the end we turned left into "Niels Bohrstraat" and third left into "Kelvinstraat". We parked immediately on the right. When we walked to the location photo [117] we saw a woman put some garbage outside the house that is in the picture. We waited until she was gone and I quickly took one picture. After we walked back to the car, two more cars arrived an parked in front of the house. (Although there is no law that forbids one to take pictures from a public road, I can imagine that not all people like some stranger to take a picture of their house.)

Photo [106]

14:10 We continued into "Kevinstraat", turned left into "Lorentzstraat" at the end, and the first left into "Burgermeester Kessensingel". At the end, we turned right into "N278". In slow bend to the right (second) we turned left into "Weg van Heer naar Bemelen", where I immediately noted a sign saying that it was private road. We turned the car and looked a little around if we could see if this was the location where photo [105] was taken. We thought not. But I noticed that two tries on the left side of the road could be the trees visible in the picture. After we had seen several car going in and out the road, we decided to ignore the sign, also because it looked like a normal road, and continue into "Weg van Heer naar Bemelen". When we wanted to turn left into "De Steeg", we noticed a sign saying that it was forbidden to enter for cars. We parked the car. 14:15. From this point you have a nice view of Maastricht and I took two pictures, one of the wide view and one zoom of the city center. We walked to the location of photo [106], which was just before the vinyard on the right. I took three pictures (combined) at this location.

Photo [105]

We walked a little further along the small road, which leads to the crossing of "Bemelerweg" and "Scharnerweg", to see if we could find the location for photo [105]. After some consideration, I took two pictures (combined) at what could be the location of this picture, but I was not very convinced. Next we walked back to the car.

Photo [104]

14:46 We continued along "Weg van Heer naar Bemelen". We turned left into "Sint Antoniusbank", which changes into "Sint Laurentiusstraat". At the end we turned left into "Oude Akerstraat". We noticed many people on racing bikes. We turned right into "Scharnerweg" to look for the possible locations for photo [91] and photo [92], but I noticed that it was a very small road and there were many people biking. So, I decided that we would skip these two photos and continue to the next one. After having reversed, we continued along "Bemelerweg". We turned left into "Oude Molenweg" and parked the car on the left. 14:57 At the location of photo [104] I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [103]

15:04 We continued and turned right into "Keerderstraat", left into "Meidoorn" and left into "Esdoorn". Somewhere at the end we parked on the right. 15:07 We walked left into "Meidoorn" and left into "Vijverdalseweg", which is quite a busy road. We walked to the location of photo [103] only to discover that not much was visible because the bushes had grown quite high. I took a picture from the other side of the road, and two pictures (combined) at the location.

Photo [89]

We walked back to the car. 15:15 We turned left into "Meidoorn", right into "Vijverdalseweg", and right at the second roundabout into "Bergerstraat". There we parked our car on a parking place of a company on the left of the road. 15:18 I took three pictures (combined) at the location of photo [89].

Photo [90]

15:33 We went back to the roundabout and turned right into "Vijverdalseweg", right into "Bergerstraat", and right into "Molenweg". There we parked the car at the beginning. 15:25 We walked a little further to the location of photo [90] and I took two pictures (combined) there.

Photo [78]

15:31 We turned back, and continued right into "Bergerstraat". Just before the vinyard on the left, we made a U-turn making use of the busstops on both sides of the road. We parked the car at the first entry to a field on the right side of the road. 15:34 We looked a little for the location of photo [78] based on the pylons in the distance and some trees about half way. I took three pictures (combined) at the location.

Photo [77]

15:39 We continued along the "Bergerweg" back to Maastricht. We could not turn right into "Peutgensweg" as it was closed for normal traffic. Instead we turned right into "Molenweg" and parked our car on the right just before the next crossing. 15:43 There we verified that this was indeed the location of photo [77]. I took two (combined) pictures.

Photo [63]

15:46 We continued along "Molenweg", but had to turn left into "Wagenlaan" because the last part of "Molenweg" is a one-way road. We turned right into "Appelhegge", but this appeared rather useless, because after to left turns this road came back to "Wagenlaan". Here we continued to the right. At the end we turned right into "Schovenlaan", right into "Ambyerstraat-Zuid", and right into "Longinastraat". We parked our car just outside the built-up area, where the name changes into "Hooverenweg". 15:52 We walked to the location of photo [63], where I took two sets of two pictures at slightly different locations, just a few meters apart from each other. (last pair combined.)

Photo [65]

15:59 We continued along the Hooverenweg", and because it was a small road, we had to follow it quite far to find a place where we could turn. After we turned, we came back to the location of photo [65] on the left of the road. 16:05 I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [64]

15:09 A little further we came to the location of photo [64]. 16:11 I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [62]

16:15 We continued and took the fifth street to the right. We parked right after the first street on the left. At the location of photo [62], I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [48]

16:29 We continue along the road and at the end we turned left. At the end left and immediately right again. We parked at the right. 16:32 At the location of photo [48], I took two sets of pictures from different heights (first set and second set).

Photo [49]

16:35 We continued along the road, and turned right into "Ambyerstraat-Noord", next left into "Hagenstraat", and again left into "Molenweg". At the location of photo [49], I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [50]

16:40 We left the car where it was parked, because we could not continue further into "Hagenstraat" because it was closed for normal traffic. We walked back and continued walking left into "Hagenstraat". At the location of photo [50], which I had guessed correctly, I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [51]

17:00 We continued a little further along the "Hagenstraat" until we arrived at the location of photo [51]. 17:05 There I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [76]

We walked back to the car. 17:21 We turned with the car, and turned right into "Hagenstraat". At the end we turned left into "Ambyerstraat-Noord", which after some time changes into "Ambyerstraat-Zuid". Just before the end of the built-up area, we turned left into "Schovenlaan" and parked on the right. 17:27 We walked back to the crossing and took one picture at the location of photo [76]. Then we walked a little closer, and I took another two pictures (combined).

Photo [75]

17:29 We turned the car and continue left into "Ambyerstraat-Zuid". At the end we turned right into "Terblijerweg". We missed the "Stadionweg", and turned right at the roundabout into "Olympiaweg". We turned the second right into an unnamed street leading to some soccer fields. At the parking place, we found the location for photo [75]. There I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [74]

17:36 We turned back, and left into "Olympiaweg". At roundabout we turned right into "Terblijerweg", left, and immediately right into "Doctor Schaepmanstraat". We parked on the left under some trees. 17:39 We crossed the street to the location of photo [74]. There I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [87]

17:42 We turn back and turned the second left into "Doctor Schaepmanstraat" (continued). Next we turned fifth right into "Frankenstraat" (a big road). Because we could not park before the second road on the right, we turned left into "Dagobertstraat". At the next crossing we turned and we parked at the right of the "Dagobertstraat" close to the "Frankenstraat". 17:46 We crossed the street, and I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [87]. I had to prevent the sun to shine in the camera lens by holding out my cap above it.

Photo [102]

17:51 We turned right into "Frankenstraat", and second right into "Doctor Schaepmanstraat". At second roundabout we turned left into "Adelbert van Scharnlaan", and next second right. We parked before the next crossing. 17:54 At the location of photo [102], I took two pictures (combined).

To the hotel

We turned right into "Dampstraat", right into "Mockstraat", and left into "Adelbert van Scharnlaan". At roundabout we turned left into "Sibemaweg". On the next roundabout we turned left, and arrived at the Van der Valk hotel. We checked in and made out dinner reservation at seven o'clock in the evening. We went upstairs to refresh ourselves a little and then we went to have our dinner. Li-Xia had chicken soup while I had leek soup. For the main dish Li-Xia had lamb meat stew and I had grilled turkey. We had some ice cream as desert. When we came upstairs, I took a picture of the sky with the moon in it. We did some fitness and made use of the bath of our room.

May 1: Day two

When we woke up around seven in the morning. When I saw the sun shine deep into our room, I realized that this would not be ideal for taking pictures. I decided that it might be a good idea to first spend some time searching for the two pictures that we skipped yesterday, and also (re)visit some other places. After having taken our breakfast, we left.

Photo [87] again

8:11 I also wanted to look at photo [87] again, because the original picture was also taken in the morning. Outside the hotel we turned left, and right at the roundabout, after the second roundabout we turned the third left into "Frankenstraat". We parked our car after the second road on the right. 8:20 We walked back to the location, and I took one picture.

Photo [88]

We turned the car, turned second right into "Koning Clovisstraat". At the roundabout we turned left into "Scharnerweg", which changes into "Bergerstraat". We looked for the graveyard which should be somewhere on the left, but when we arrived at the next roundabout, I knew that we had gone to far, and we turned back. We turned right into "Ambyerstraat-Zuid", and parked about halfway this street. 8:29 We went into the bicycle path which led to "Memorielaan". We walked till the end, and then turned left to look at the graveyard. We looked around a little and then I did take one picture, just to have a picture.

Photo [92]

We walked back to the car. 8:44 We continued along the "Ambyerstraat-Zuid". At the end it turns right into "Weerhuisweg". At the end we turned left into "Vijverdalseweg" and at the roundabout right into "Bergerstraat". We turned the second right into "Peutgensweg" and parked our car at the next crossing. 8:53 We continued straight and at the end of the path, we took one picture close to the cross mark of photo [92] from a possible location for this picture.

Photo [91]

When I saw photo [91] again, I immediately got an idea for a possible location for this picture. We walked back to the crossing. First I had thought that this photo was taken along "Schandert". But we could not go in there, because it is a private road. (There was a man running a part into it, there where it was going up-hill, and walking backwards.) We went back to where we had parked the car, and turned right into "Scharnerweg". And there where the forest started on the rightside of the road, we found the location for photo [92], exactly at the place that I had in mind. I showed the book to a lady that was passing by. I took four pictures (combined) at this location.

Photo [102] again

We walked back to the car. 9:21 We drove back to the hotel the same road we came. But then I decided to visit the location for photo [102] again. 9:28 I took two pictures (combined) at this location.

Photo [101]

From there we went back to the hotel. 9:35 We made use of the bathroom and continued. 9:49 From the hotel we turned left, and at the roundabout right into "Sibemaweg". We turned right into "N278", and the second exit to the right (leaf of cloveleaf) onto "E25". We immediately took the exit to the right. At the top we turned left into "Sint Gerardusweg". We missed the second road left into "Nassaulaan". At the end of the "Sint Gerardusweg" weg we turned right into "Heerderweg". At the end we parked at the parking place, and walked into "Nassaulaan". I took two pictures at the location of photo [101], the second closer than the first.

Photo [100]

10:00We returned into "Heerderweg". At the end we turned left, crossing the railroad, and then immediately left again into "Bloemenweg", which continues into "Baron van Hovellstraat". We turned the third right into "Leo Moonenstraat", and right into "Jonkheer Ruysstraat". Because there was no parking place, we drove backwards a little. 10:05 At the location of photo [100], I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [85]

10:10 We turned second left into "Bloemenweg", which continues into "Duitsepoort" and "Spoorweglaan". We turned fourth left (before railway station) into "Akerstraat", right into "Wilhelminasingel", and third left into "Sint Maartenslaan". We parked at the end. 10:17. Around the corner, I took three pictures (of which two almost the same) (combined) at the location of photo [85].

Photo [72]

10:21 We turned right into "Franciscus Romanusweg" only to discover that it was closed. We made a U-turn, and turned left into "Sint Maartenslaan". We turned the second left into "Wilhelminasingel", up the ramp to the bridge. We turned right into "Franciscus Romanusweg", and left into "Griend" into parking place "Oost" (or "Griend"), a QPark parking place. 10:26 We walked outside, and then to the Maes river, where I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [72].

Photo [44]

10:35 We walked back to the parking garage and entered it through the ramp, where there was a small pedestrian path. We payed € 0.50 at the other end of the garage, and outside we turned left to continue into "Franciscus Romanusweg" which we followed turning right and left. On the big crossing, we turn left into "Noorderbrug". We took the next exit to the right, and got into a traffic jam. It appeared that there was a lot of traffic going into the city. On a local radio station we already heard that is was very busy in Maastricht due to the fact that May 1 is a national holiday in Belgium and Germany, and that the shops are closed in those countries, but not in the Netherlands. At the bottom turn left into "Bosscherweg". After two bridges over water, we turn right into "Oude Smeermaeserweg" and right into "Stuweg". At the end we parked the car close to the dam. There was clearly less water flowing over the dam, than when we were here on first time on February 27. I took four pictures (combined) at the location of photo [44].

Photo [58]

10:56 We continued to the right along the water. A saw two man fishing along the water. 11:03 I took three pictures (combined) at the location of photo [58].

Photo [32]

11:06 We drove all the way back to "Bosscherweg", and continue to the right. There was a long line of car waiting before a traffic light that is intended to dose the number of cars entering the city along this road. We park just before the first houses on the right. 11:15 We went outside and crossed the road to search for the location of photo [32]. It immediately became clear that it would not be very easy because unlike in February, all trees and bushes were full with leaves. We walked along the road back into the direction of Maastricht. A little further than we looked the last time, we found a spot that looked like to match quite good. I took two pictures (combined) from this location.

Photo [22]

11:28 We walked back to the car and when we arrived there, there was a man asking us some questions. He thought we belonged to some people that had parked at the field besides his house. We told him that we had nothing to do with them and were about to leave. Because of the traffic jam we would get into if we would return, we decided to continue and see if there was another road through which we could enter the city. Just before the border with Belgium we came along the location of photo [22] and we parked our car on the beginning of the bus stop because I noticed that some cart of Kayak Maasland had been placed again. But shortly after some police man parked on the otherside of the road and I was afraid they would send us away because we had parked on the bus stop. So, we quickly walked over to the location where I took two pictures (combined). Then we saw the policemen stop a car entering the Netherlands from Belgium and ask for their paper.

Photo [53]

11:46 We continued along the road into Belgium, where it name changes into "Brugstraat". We turned the third left (at the traffic lights) into "Brusselseweg" (N766). We followed that road back into the Netherlands, and after the first roundabout we stopped at the service road to check the map. We continued and at the next roundabout we turned right into "Clavecymbelstraat", which changes into "Cantecleerstraat". At the following roundabout we turned right into "Malbergsingel". Just before the end where it turns to the right, we turned left into "Schepelruwe". We turned right into "Schildruwe" and immediately left, where we parked. At the location of photo [53] I took four pictures (combined).

Photo [34]

11:50 We returned along the same road to "Malbergsingel" and turned right into it. At the roundabout we continued straight into "Malpertuisplein". At the next roundabout we turned left into "Nobellaan", which changes into "Fagotstraat", "Frans van de Laarplein", and "Fort Willemweg". We turned right into "Cabergerweg". We followed this road to the left into "Frontensingel", which changes into "Noorderbrug". At the next crossing we turned left into "Willem Alexanderweg", and left into "Balijeweg", straight at the roundabout into "Borgharenweg". We crossed the lock, and stopped before "Schutkolkweg" to look at the location of photo [34], where we were before on February 26. 12:03 The in the front where full of leaves and obstructing the view. After having tried to determine the correct location (which differs from the one I took pictures before), I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [12]

12:09 We continued along "Sluisdijk", which changes into "Bovenstraat" in the village "Borgharen". We turned the fourth street right into "Kasteelstraat", which changes into "Spekstraat". Shortly after where this road changes into "Pasestraat" we stopped at the location of photo [12] 12:15 I took two pictures (combined) at this location.

Photo [6]

12:18 We continued and at the end we turned right into "Ruiterstraat". We turned the second left into "Meebruggenweg". We parked the car at where it goes over the dyke. 12:21 We looked around some time to determine the exact location of photo [6]. Because at the exact location the view is obstructed by a large bush, I took two pictures (combined) standing before it and then also one at the location.

Photo [10]

12:40 We turned the car and turned left into "Geneinde" (right is "Ruijterstraat"). We turned the second street right into "Op de Bos". We followed this road till the canal, where in the U-turn in the road we went straight into "Weg naar Hartelstein". We parked at left just before "Bunder Voetpad". 12:44 We searched for a better location for photo [10]. After some searching we found not far from where we had parked the car, a location that seemed to match. We found one tree with a "matching" bend. I took three pictures (combined) at the location.

Photo [7]

12:49 We continued along "Weg naar Hartelstein" and turned left into "Hartelstein". We parked the car in the turned. 12:51 We walked a little closer and and I took three pictures (combined) at the location of photo [7].

Photo [27]

12:55 We turned the car and turned right into "Weg naar Hartelstein" and followed our way along "Op de Bos", and turned left across the bridge over the river into "Klipperweg". At the end we turned right into "Fregatweg" where we parked left (after having turned the car) before the first road to the left ("Schoenerweg") just before a small path that is marked "Vaeshartelweg" on the map. 13:01 We walked into the forest and turned left into a path to search for the location of photo [27]. Not far, I noticed a rather big tree, and when we came closer it match the tree on the left side of the picture. We were quite thrilled about our discovery. I took three pictures (combined).

Photo [28]

13:11 We walk back to the car, and continue along the "Fregatweg" in the opposite direction from where we came. We turn right into "Boekenderweg" and again right into "Weert". Here we park the car on the right side of the road 13:15. We search some time for the location for photo [28]. When I think I have found a "better location" than the last time on February 26, I take three pictures (combined).

Photo [60]

13:20 We drive a little further and park the car in the shadow of some trees. There we do some planning. We continue along the road, and at the end we turn right into "Marienwaard". At the second crossing with traffic lights we turn left into "Kasteel Erensteinstraat" and immediately right into "Kasteel Kessenichstraat". When we want to turn left into "Kasteel Cartielsstraat" I notice that it is a one-way street, and I decide to turn back into the street where we came from noticing that this is a one-way road too and that we entered it against the driving direction. 13:42 We walked back to "Kasteel Cartielsstraat" and I take two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [60]. We also show the book to a lady that was busy cleaning her front garden.

Photo [61]

13:48 We continued through "Kasteel Kessenichstraat" and turn right into "Kasteel Erensteinstraat", which changes into "Marathonweg". We go through the tunnel and after the second road to the right we park at the parking place of a tennis court. 13:52 We go to the otherside of the road and search for the location of photo [61], not really expecting to find it. Finally I take one picture (combined) along "Marathonweg" in the direction of the cross mark.

Photo [113]

14:01 Back in the car, I again take some time to do some planning. Then we drove back along the "Marathonweg", through the tunnel, left at the traffic lights into "Meerssenerweg", at the next crossing left into "Viaductweg". We went into the petrol station to fill up the car with some gas. Then turned right into "E25". At the cloveleaf we took exit to the right into "John F Kennedysingel" (N278). On this we took the first exit to the right into "Renier Nafzgerstraat". At the roundabout we turned left into "Heugemerweg", the second left into "Randwycksingel", right into "Leuvenlaan" and right into "Erasmusdomein" looking for a parking place. We parked before the Chinese restaurant "Chiang Dynasty". 14:26 From there we walked to the crossing of "Randwycksingel" and "Limburglaan". We crossed "Limburglaan" and walked to the the location of photo [113] where I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [144]

We walked back to the car. 14:47 We drove back to "Leuvenlaan" where we turned left. Then left again into "Randwycksingel" and left into "Limburglaan", which changes into "Hoge Weerd". We followed this road for a long distance and turned right opposite the road "Molensingel" to the left. The last time we came here, the gate to a small harbour was closed. Because of the "No trespassing" sign we parked outside the gate. 14:52 Nevertheless we walked inside and approached someone at one of the carvans standing around the area. We asked if we could take a picture, and the man explained that the area where we wanted to go was public. I asked him about the "No trespassing" sign, and he said that it did not apply to the road at the front of the area leading to the public ground. We walked back along the "Hoge Weerd" (separated by a small canal with water) in the direction of the center of the city. After some searching, we found the location for photo [144], and I took two pictures (combined).

Looking for photo [148]

We walked back the car. 15:09 We turned the car, and turned left into "Hoge Weerd" back to the city. We continued this road, went under the bridge of "John F Kennedybrug" (N278) and turned right into "Renier Nafzgerstraat" at the roundabout and then right onto "John F Kennedybrug". We took the first exit to the right and at the bottom we turned left into "Maasboulevard". We followed this into Belgium where the name changes into "Rue Collinet". We turned and parked the car. 15:25 We walked up to some restaurant and looked over the water, then we walked a bit along the road to see if we could find the location for photo [148] although it was quite obvious that we would probably not find it. And we did not find it.

Photo [132]

15:34 We drove back into the Netherlands, and turned into "Lage Kanaaldijk" which runs parallel to "Maasboulevard" at the place where the road leaves the Maes river. We turned left into "Ursulineweg and at the top right into "Recollectweg" and immediately left into "Schutterijweg". This road is closed for traffic shortly after the first turn. I turned the car and we parked along the road. 15:44 We continued walking along "Schutterijweg" and turned left into "Ganzendries" looking for the location of photo [123], but we could not find it. At the end of this road there was a parking place on the left side of the road. I took a picture of an information sign. We turned left into "Luikerweg" and right into "Van Schaikweg". We met two teenagers pulling along two donkeys and showed them photo [132] asking if it looked familiar to them. Just along this road on the left there where some places where you could look into the marl quarry. Soon a noticed the similarities with photo [132]. We looked at several places to see we could find it, but failed to find a place that matched. I guessed that maybe the location from which the picture was taken had been overgrown. I finally took one picture.

Photo [122]

We continued a little further along "Van Schaikweg". A little further we found a location that looked like photo [122] on the right, and I took two pictures (combined).

Photo [123]

We walked back to the car, still looking for the possible location for photo [123]. We did follow some small path starting from one corner of the parking place for a little. But returned when it did not look promissing. I especially searched for the dead tree on the right edge of the photo. But we could not find anything. At the top of "Schutterijweg" I took two pictures (combined) of the view. When we almost got into the car, I noticed a small path along the field on the right, and we decided to follow it. After some turnes we arrived at a large field with trees on the right. I decided to walk along this field and almost at the end I found a dead tree, and after some studying it looked like a match and I took three pictures (combined).

Going into the city

We walked back to the car. 16:36 We decided to go into the city center. At the end of "Schutterijweg" we turned right into "Recollectenweg" and immediately left into "Ursulinenweg", and left into "Maasboulevard". We followed this till just under the "John F. Kennedybrug" bridge", and turned right into "D.N. Ingelsenhoof" and parked at the same place where we did last time.

We crossed "Maasboulevard" and walked through the park to city gate in "Sint Pieterskade". It was rather hot and there were some girl sitting in bikini on the grass. We went through the gate and continued along "Begijnenstraat". We turned right into "Maastrichter Heidenstraat", and the second right into "Ridderstraat", left into "Koestraat", straight right to "Onze Lieve Vrouwenplein", where we followed to the left into the direction of "Wolfstraat". We walked through "Wolfstraat" and brought a short visit to the "Bart Smits" toy shop (just like we did last time). We continued straight through "Kersenmarkt" and "Kleine Straat". We went to the tourist information center on the right and I bought a street map of Maastricht. Then we turned left into "Grote Straat" looking for a drug store. We found one, and besides a "De Slegte" bookshop. We looked through the store and found some copies of the book "Maastricht 148" still in foil. We decided to buy one copy. We went returned along the same way. On the corner of "Grote Straat" and "Kleine Straat" I bought a waffle.

From the parking place we drove back to the hotel where we arrived shortly after six. We made resevations for seven o'clock and after having gone to our room we had our dinner.

May 2: Day three

Li-Xia woke me up telling me that it was already eight. She had already been awake for some time. After having dressed we went downstairs for breakfast. We decided to checkout and leave. When we got into the car, I noted that it was just before eight. Apparently, Li-Xia has been mistaken with respect to the time.

Photo [88]

7:58 We left the hotel and turned left into "Nijverheidsweg", at the roundabout right into "Sibemaweg". After the second roundabout we turned the third left into "Frankenstraat". We had a quick look at the location of photo [87] and made a U-turn. We followed along "Frankenstraat", which changes into "Pastoor Jacobsweg". We parked the car before the last row of houses on the left, before the graveyard on the right. The last part of the street is a bicycle path. 8:06 We walked further along the bicycle path to "Oostermaasweg" where we turned right. We looked around there to see if we could find something matching. But when we could not, we walked back to the car. When we came close to the car, I noticed that the picture might be taken from the North of the graveyard. (Yesterday we looked at it from the South.) But also the area to the North of the graveyard has been build full with houses. I searched for a location furthers away from the graveyard and took two pictures (combined). This ended our search for the location of photo [88]

Photo [80]

8:21 We turned the car and drove back to the hotel, but before going under the bridge, we turned left and then right onto "Akersteenweg" (N278), which changes into "John F. Kennedysingel", "John F. Kennedybrug", and "Prins Bisschopsingel". At the roundabout we turned left into "Tongerseweg". We turned the seventh right into "Javastraat", which changes into "Gewantmakersdreef". Just before its name changes into "Potteriestraat", we turned left into "Opalinestraat". Almost at the end we turned left into "Decorstraat" and parked our car. 8:39 There I took two pictures (combined) at the location of photo [80].

Photo [79]

8:44 We turned the car and turned left into "Opalinestraat", immediately left into "Keramieksingel", left into "Bokaalstraat", and right into "Goudenweg". At the end we turn left into "Dousbergparcours", which is a winding road that slowly bends to the left up the "Dousberg" hill. At the top there are many workers. I lower the window and ask if there is someone that we can ask permission for. A man tells us to turn right into a road and follow that where we will find some yellow huts with the managers. We turned right into the road which went down quite steep. We followed the road and came close to the location of photo [79], but when we arrived at the crossing of "Goudenweg" and "Bokaalstraat" we still have not seen the huts. We make a U turn and park our car a little further. 8:56 We get out of the car and ask some of the man who are working there if we could take a picture. The man says: "Sure, go ahead". We walk over the newly laid path of the golf course, which is still under construction, and head to the location I consider the most probable location and I take two pictures (combined).

Photo [119]

9:06 We turn the car and turned the second right into "Keramieksingel", left into "Opalinestraat", at the end right into "Gewantmakersdreef". We follow this till "Tongersweg" where we turn right. We turned the second left into "Pietzersstraat". At the end we turn left and immediately right to continue along "Pietzersstraat". At the end we turned right into "Redemptielaan". For some time, I doubt for what we should do, but then we decide to follow our way along "Vroenhovenweg", which a little further turns into a small road. We cross marker is placed in the field on the right of the road. We decide to follow it a little further and notice that road goes down while the field on the right stays level. There we find a location matching photo [119]. 9:25. We get out of the car and I take one picture.

Searching for photos [143] and [148]

9:25 We continue along the road which crosses into Belgium, where its name changes into "Bieslanderweg". At the end we turn left into "Muizenberg". In the Belgium village "Kanne" we turn the second right into "Statiestraat", left into "Op Het Broek", at the end right into "Onderstraat", and left into "Pruisstraat". We turned the car and parked it before the graveyard. 9:35 We walked along the "Pruisstraat", and took the walking path left to the cave. We looked around the cave a little. I used my laser pointer to trace the back of the cave. We climbed up to "Poppelmondeweg" and walked along it, and took the short-cut through the valley to the location of photo [142]. There we noticed a gate with a path leading to the possible location of photo [143], with a "danger, do not enter" sign besides it. Nevertheless we decided to give it a try, because it did not look dangerous. We walked till the end of the path till me met some fence. When we walked back we noticed a small path to the right going down, but we did not take it. When we arrived at the gate, we saw another man approaching and shortly after we went out of the gate, he went in. He had a small camera in his hand. Maybe he thought you could just walk through there. We turned left and continued along "Poppelmondeweg". At the tree way junction we turned left. A little further there is a fence again. We turned right and than walked along the parking place to search for the location of photo [143]. We also searched along the border of the picknick area. We decided to abandon our search for the location of this photo again. Then we continued and took the most left path. We followed this path all around the hill searching for the location of photo [148], but we could not find it. At the end, I just took (one picture). At the next split we turned right and then right again into the path leading to the top of the hill. At the top we enjoyed the view and sat on a bench. I also took two pictures (second). Then we walked back to car, taking a short-cut along "Oude Pruis".

Photo [141]

11:36 We drove back and turned the second right into "Onderstraat", which back in the Netherlands, changes into "Mergelweg". At the first house on the right we turned the car and parked it before the vegatable garden on the right. 11:41 We walked to the location of photo [141], but when we were at it, I decided not to take a picture, because I felt that it would not turn out better than the one, I took the last time on February 27.

Photo [140]

We continued and drove back into the village "Kanne" in Belgium. We turned right into "Berkenlaan", which makes a turn to the left. We turned right into "Op Het Broek", right into "Statiestraat" and left into "Boys", which changes into "Muizenberg". There we turned right into a small road leading up to the field from which photo [140] is taken. But when I noticed that the fence was closed, I decided not to take a picture there again.

Photo [83]

We continued along the path and just before we came to the main road, three bicyclist approached us and one of them made some gesture indicating that I was mad. Only then I realized that the small road is a bicycle path. We continued along "Muizenberg" until the main road "Maastrichtersteenweg" where we turned right into the direction of Maastricht. Inside the Netherlands, the name changes into "Tongerseweg". At the large roundabout we turned left into "Hertogsingel". At the next roundabout we continued straight into "Statensingel" and went into the service road. We turned right into "Zakstraat" and parked our car on the right just before the next crossing. We walked to the location of photo [83], which we visited before on February 27. I took four pictures (combined). That makes this location where I took the largest number of pictures.

Photo [59]

12:11 We both felt like going home early. We turned the car, and turned right into "Statensingel" and at the end right into "Frontensingel", which changes into "Noorderbrug". At the large crossing we turned left into "Willem Alexanderweg", right into "Dolmansstraat", and right into "Sareptastraat". We parked left before the end. 12:20 We had been here before on February 27. At the location of photo [59], I took two pictures (combined).

Going home

12:27 From here we drove home where we arrived around half past three.
